Don’t Miss the Guitar Duo Loren and Mark on January 21!

Loren-Mark-Palace_300px.jpgI’m very excited to be bringing Loren Barrigar and Mark Mazengarb to Rochester for a Golden Link concert, coming up on Saturday, January 21. These two amazing guitarists have opened for Tommy Emmanuel several times in Rochester, but this is their first Golden Link appearance. In addition to world-class guitar playing, their concerts feature Loren’s superb lead vocals and beautiful harmonies from Mark.

Influenced by Americana, jazz, country & western, and classical music, the duo’s unique style of guitar playing is largely built on the thumb-picking techniques pioneered by guitar greats Merle Travis and Chet Atkins. Since first performing together at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society convention in 2010, Loren Barrigar and Mark Mazengarb have toured extensively in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Russia, and Mark’s homeland, New Zealand. Based in the Syracuse area, they have three albums, which have all won SAMMYs (Syracuse Area Music Awards) for Best Album.

Join us for a Holiday Hootenanny on December 10!

Hootenanny_20141213_3599_40.jpgWe are incredibly lucky here in Rochester to have such a rich musical community, and especially Golden Link. I noticed it as soon as I moved here in 2002 – Golden Link folks just really enjoy getting together to make music and have nurtured a wonderful, welcoming space to share songs and stories.

As Allen Hopkins wrote in a Golden Link blog in December 2014, “Woody Guthrie’s Almanac Singers collective called their New York City rent parties ‘hootenannies,’ and the idea of an informal musical get-together – part jam session, part sing-around – really took hold during the Great Folk Scare of the 1960s.”

New Voices favorite Pepper & Sassafras return in November

Pepper-Sassafras_074_300px.jpgAt the Turtle Hill Folk Festival in September, Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers and Wendy Sassafras Ramsay – aka Pepper & Sassafras – were selected the audience favorite during the New Voices Emerging Artist Showcase. They return to Golden Link for their own full-length concert on Saturday, November 19 at 7:30 pm at the Rochester Christian Reformed Church.

Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers is the grand-prize winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest and the founding editor of Acoustic Guitar magazine. Musician Patty Larkin says, “Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers’ songs ring true and new. Spot-on work from an American wordsmith.” He teams up with Wendy Ramsay, harmonizer extraordinaire, who adds flute, clarinet, guitar, accordion, and her quirky originals to the mix.

Robert Jones and Matt Watroba perform Music that Matters at 45th Turtle Hill Folk Festival

Robert-Matt_300px.jpgA concert by the Detroit musicians Robert Jones and Matt Watroba covers the gamut of traditional American music – blues and spirituals, field hollers and work songs – and you’ll also hear some original compositions and maybe even some early rock ‘n’ roll, R&B, and country. They consider it all “roots” music, and it’s also music with a message of mutual respect, social change, and diversity.

Jones & Watroba will kick off Golden Link's 45th Annual Turtle Hill Folk Festival on Friday evening, September 9, followed by concerts by folk-rock harmony trio Gathering Time and fiddler, singer, and stepdancer April Verch with her band. On Saturday night, September 10, the bluegrass band Jim Gaudet & The Railroad Boys takes the stage, followed by a double set by singer/songwriter and virtuoso guitarist David Wilcox. Most of the featured performers take the stage again on Sunday, September 11 at 2 pm for the grand finale.

Multi-talented April Verch returns for Turtle Hill Folk Festival

Verch_CD_Back_crop_300px.jpgFiddler, singer, and stepdancer April Verch knows how relevant an old tune can be. She grew up surrounded by living, breathing roots music in Canada’s Ottawa Valley, listening to her father’s country band and lively music at church and community dances, as well as playing tunes to win fiddle competitions.

Today, Verch’s delicate voice, energetic footwork, and stunning fiddle playing engage contemporary listeners with her fresh and feisty approach to traditional music. April Verch returns to the 45th Annual Turtle Hill Folk Festival with her trio for a concert Friday night, September 9, and workshops on Saturday morning, September 10.
