“Ana Egge’s songs are low and lonesome, big square-state noir ballads which she plays on a guitar she built with her own two hands and sings like she’s telling us her deepest, darkest secrets.” – Steve Earle
“New York’s Ana Egge stole the show, and perhaps the entire festival … she delivers her stunning melodies with her breathy, sultry voice and towering stage presence.” – Chart Magazine
Brooklyn-based troubadour Ana Egge has made a name for herself as a Gillian Welch figure with a rocker attitude, which once prompted Lucinda Williams to call her “the Nina Simone of folk.” Her career has included recordings with Steve Earle, Ron Sexsmith, The Stray Birds, and a recent collaboration with the Danish indie band The Sentimentals for their album “Say That Now.”
Raised in a small North Dakota town of 50 people (“I was taught how to shoot a gun and how to enjoy alfalfa sprouts and tofu, raised by two back-to-the-land hippies,” Egge says), she has since traded the openness of the American Plains for the untamable wilderness of New York City. The power of her voice lies in its ability to be at once haunting and comforting, possessing an otherworldly vocal quality.
Joining Egge for this concert are Alec Speigelman (Bass clarinet, sax, pump organ, and vocals) and Rob Hecht (fiddle, sax, and vocals). Alec can be seen accompanying Ana in the second video below in their performance of Dolly Parton's "Wildflowers".
