Dennis Monroe Tribute Concert

February 4th the Rochester music community suffered a tragic loss. Dennis Monroe died suddenly, without warning, of a massive heart attack, leaving thousands of people in a state of grief and shock.
Dennis was a friend to all, an accomplished musician whose interests spanned a variety of styles ranging from Renaissance and Classical music to jazz and folk. Entertainer, writer, poet philosopher, humorist, spiritualist, historian, Dennis was a person of high integrity. In his role as teacher he combined all of these attributes and more, and a music lesson with Dennis went well beyond picks, strings and sheet music. He shared one hundred percent of himself with all of his students regardless of their level of playing or ability. He was able to inspire people, to take them to places they never thought possible, and he had a gift for connecting people, his students, his peers and those that he met wherever he traveled. Dennis was a giving caring individual who shared his musical gifts and his joy of life freely.
A tribute concert celebrating Dennis’ life and the musical gifts that he gave called “Lasting Lessons” will be held on Sunday June 25th at 4 pm at the Hochstein Performance Center, 50 North Plymouth Avenue. There, some of the area’s finest musicians will join with those coming from around the country to honor the life and work of this venerable musician. The program will include a number of his students including the String Song Mandolin Orchestra, a group that he started last year to encourage people to play in an ensemble setting.
The ticket cost for this event is $25.00 with proceeds from the event contributed to the Music Through the Ages Fund at Rochester Area Community Foundation, a fund honoring his memory that supports activities in the spirit of his musical creativity and work. The fund will be used for programs, projects and initiatives that will strengthen opportunities for communication and education through music and provide opportunities for collaboration between musicians. One of his pet projects was the creation of a string program for 5th and 6th graders in one of the Rochester City elementary schools.
