Golden Link’s next Fifth Tuesday Member Showcase Concert features a variety of musical styles, from contemporary folk, Americana, and blues to old-time, ballads, and vintage country. The performers include:
Parma Hardpan
They rose like specters from the hardpan, wearing beards, beads and flowers in their hair, then took a detour into corporate America to earn some bread. Two former Hippies and a Republican, they dabbled in folk and rock individually for decades, eventually forming an unlikely alliance in the folk genre, where they create and cover songs of liberal angst. This of course illustrates the axiom that music transcends politics. The band’s practice space is in Parma and their lead singer is a gentleman farmer who has spent many hours bulldozing into the Parma clay, digging ponds, and getting cozy with the hardpan. Dan Kuchta (guitar and vocals), Maureen Kuchta (clarinet, saxophone, and recorders), and Ed Kendrick (bass and vocals) perform a lively mix of traditional and contemporary folk, Americana, and a touch of blues. Their music has been influenced by some of the club’s favorites like Bill Staines and David Mallet, as well as greats from the ‘60s and ‘70s such as Bob Dylan, Steve Goodman, and John Prine.
Ernie Lawrence
Ernie Lawrence played rock music in bands and folk in coffeehouses in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Due to the responsibilities of work and family, he didn't perform much in public for 30 years. Since 2007, Ernie has been playing clubs, coffeehouses, and festivals all around western New York, often with his son Andy. Ernie will be alone for this fifth Tuesday and will do a lot of original songs. His brand of folk music is deeply influenced by blues and jazz.
Steppin’ Out String Band
Four dynamic and talented women–Kathleen Cappon (accordion and percussion), Barbara Jablonski (hammered dulcimer and ukulele), Cathy McGrath (guitar), and Becky Schneider (upright bass, banjo, and mandolin)–have joined forces to form this high-energy band. Combining folk songs and ballads with beautiful, close vocal harmonies, lively and fun traditional dance tunes, and old-timey songs, the Steppin’ Out String Band is a favorite with audiences of all ages. The Backsliders
Jim Schleich and the Backslider Trio is a long-established and familiar group on the folk/craft festival/coffee house music scene. Consisting of the aforementioned Jim Schleich on vocals and acoustic guitar, Ray Bellizia on lead guitar, and Eric Huppert on the electric bass, the Backsliders perform repertoire consisting mostly of material from country music's golden era, the 1950s and 60s. Influences include Hank Snow, Ray Price, Merle Haggard, Charlie Pride, Hoyt Axton, Buck Owens, and even Willie and Emmylou ... In both style and sound, from Bakersfield to Nashville, the Backsliders keep the torch lit brightly.
