Golden Link’s next Fifth Tuesday Member Showcase Concert features a variety of musical styles, including contemporary folk, Americana, old-time, gospel, and vintage country. The concert is Tuesday, May 31 at 7:30 pm at the Twelve Corners Presbyterian Church; $5 at the door, with refreshments available for purchase. The performers include:
Gary Gocek
Gary Gocek grew up playing the French horn. In the early 1990s, he put
away the horn, bought a guitar, joined Golden Link and began writing
songs, more or less in that order. His writing is influenced by Tom
Paxton and Dolly Parton. He wishes that his writing could be influenced
more by Bruce Springsteen and Ani DiFranco. Gary is a software
developer, has two adult sons and lives in Perinton with his wife,
Susan and cats Neddick and Libby. Find Gary at http://www.gocek.org.
Hankerin’ Harry and the CityBillies
Hankerin’ Harry and the CityBillies grew out of a chance encounter
between Harry Allen (vocals, harmonica, washtub bass) and Sidney “Sid
Gracious” Herrington (vocals, guitar, mandolin, banjo). One simple
question – “Do you know any Hank Williams?” – led to some joint
music-making and eventually performing together at the Rochester Public
Market and a variety of local festivals including Lilac, Corn Hill,
Park Avenue, Naples. They are also regulars at the Tuesday night
sing-arounds with their high-energy, old-time music. More recently,
they have been joined by fiddler Mark Weeg, who is a well-established
violin player and teacher in Western N.Y. As the CityBillies, they had
their first gig about a year ago at the California BrewHaus. Harry says
they are “just a group of people that love to play and sing as we share
our joy with others. I guess you can say that’s what I've been
‘Hankerin’ for.”
Leslie Lee & Steve Gretz
Leslie Lee and Steve Gretz are residents of Greece, NY, where they host
monthly Old Time Music Nights and a house concert series called "Lake
Effect Shows." They have performed together as a duo for eight years,
singing songs from a variety of genres, including traditional, gospel,
bluegrass, and contemporary folk. In performance, Leslie and Steve try
to offer encouraging songs to lift spirits and soothe souls. They
highlight Leslie's pure, heartfelt lead vocals accompanied by Steve's
guitar, and close harmonies. Recently, they have focused on writing and
performing more original songs, and will be bringing a number of them
to this Golden Link Showcase. They have performed in a number of local
venues and have recorded three CDs, and are hoping to complete their
fourth by fall. For more information, visit their website: http://www.leslieandsteve.com.
Doc & The Snake Oil String Band
Also
known as WDSO (like the call letters of a radio station), Doc and the
Snake Oil String Band are a high-energy, fun, old-time string band
featuring Marie Brate (guitar, fiddle, vocals), Dan Palmer (banjo,
guitar, vocals), Ted Sherwood (bass, guitar, vocals), and Dick Bolt
(fiddle, guitar, vocals). The group has been together about a year and
a half and has played for several contra dances, a square dance at
Genesee Country Village, and at the Monroe Village Farmer's Market. The
roots of American string band music include up-beat syncopated rhythms
and the banjo from Africa and bouncy melodic twists and turns and the
fiddle from Scotch-Irish and other Europeans. The core sound of
clawhammer banjo and fiddle is filled out with the rhythmic bass and
guitar, along with distinctive vocals. It is easy listening and fun
dancing music, particularly for spontaneous clogging and "flat-footing"
– so come prepared to dance!
