MEMBERSHIP SHOWCASE CONCERT

10/30/01

This "Fifth Tuesday" Concert featured, in order of appearance, Val Fowler (Reverend Val) who describes himself as a song-finder and who demonstrated both his singing ability and his "gonzo" guitar playing on a wide variety of songs, many of which related to finding strength in coping with events such as those of September 11.

Val was followed by Su Rinas, a singer-songwriter who performed all her own compositions, a couple of which were specifically related to the events of September 11. The audience was transfixed by Su's fine, clear and powerful voice and the imagery of her lyrics.

Next came Mike Strobel, accompanied on this occasion by John Stevens on bass. Mike is a prolific singer-songwriter who also performs a wide variety of songs by others, including traditional folksongs. Both his songs and his humorous banter between numbers were well-received by the audience.

Joe LaMay and Sherri Reese, with Genesee Rose (consisting of Laurie Leenhouts on fiddle, Fred Filbrich on bass and the recent addition of John Stevens on mandolin), closed out the evening with a variety of songs, some written by Joe, some by Sherri, and some by others, but all professionally crafted with great harmonies and top-notch instrumental work. The variety of offerings from this group is always a treat.
