"In the Spirit of Pete" with Joe Jencks & Maria Dunn

“The key to the future is people joining in. The music of Joe Jencks captures this essential spirit. Joe is a fantastic singer who carries on the traditions.” – Pete Seeger

Joe-Jencks__350_20150527-Swarthmore_600.jpgPete Seeger worked to make the world a better place, from his political and environmental activism to community-building, and of course his music, always encouraging people to sing together. On the day of Pete’s 100th birthday, we will honor his musical, environmental, labor, and civil rights legacy in this special concert featuring acclaimed performing songwriters Joe Jencks and Maria Dunn, who each in their own way are continuing Pete’s legacy. You’ll hear some of Pete’s classic songs as well as Joe and Maria’s original music, and maybe a few special guests.

On the morning that Pete Seeger passed away, Joe Jencks was inspired to write “Let Me Sing You a Song” about Pete’s testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1955. The song sums up Pete’s ability to use his music for the greater good:

With nearly two decades under his belt on the international folk music circuit, Joe Jencks has become a favorite singer, performer, and songwriter of music fans throughout North America. Joe’s lyric baritone voice combined with his well-crafted heartfelt lyrics weave a richly layered tapestry. In addition to his solo work, he co-founded the dynamic harmony trio Brother Sun with Greg Greenway and Pat Wictor. For more information, visit Joe Jencks' website.

MariaDunn_hat_square_Photo_David_Williamson_600.jpgA true preserver of the spirit of folk music, Canadian musician Maria Dunn is often compared to Woody Guthrie for her keen social awareness and her unvarnished songs about the lives of working men and women. Since she began writing her own music in the mid-‘90s, Maria has drawn deeply on the folk tradition of storytelling through song to honor the resilience and grace of “ordinary” people, past and present.
