“Michael Smith stands out as one of the few undisputed geniuses among singer-songwriters.”  – Sing Out! Magazine

“… as evocative and magical as the finest literature.”  Song Talk Magazine

Michael P. Smith has been singing, writing, and touring for more than five decades. His songs have been recorded by artists the world over – in particular, his song “The Dutchman,” considered a classic in the folk community and recorded by Steve Goodman, Liam Clancy, and Tommy Makem, among many others.

michaelsmith_bw1_600.jpgSmith is considered a master of the story song, bringing to life characters like Margaret and her Dutchman, the riverboat gamblers in “Spoon River,” schoolteacher Sister Clarissa, the beautiful princess and the talking frog. Time and again, audiences report that an evening with him is an unforgettable experience, filled with stirring vocals, stories, and his fine guitar playing.

He is also an award-winning composer, including receiving the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2010 for his adaption of The Snow Queen, for which he also wrote the musical score.

A voracious reader, Smith has adapted and set literature – including works by Lorca, Steinbeck, Wilde, Brecht, and Stevenson – children’s stories, and poetry to music. His most recent project features original songs inspired by Melville’s seminal American classic, Moby Dick.
