“Take the phrasing of Townes Van Zandt and combine it with the eclecticism and blues of Ry Cooder and you’ve got Byrd, a folk singer with the heart of a rock ‘n’ roll band. Byrd’s tall tales set to music are by turns morbid, moribund and mostly magnificent musings on not-so-modern themes of love, loss and life.” – Free Times, South Carolina
Jonathan Byrd and The Pickup Cowboys are musical gunslingers, vaudevillian hucksters, and old-fashioned tent revivalists. With their latest album, Pickup Cowboy (2018), they have brought a bold new set of working-class anthems to Americana fans, and a spirit-raising show to back it up. A Jonathan Byrd show brings together complex songwriting, compelling vocals, and hot guitar picking in the line of North Carolina greats Doc Watson and Tony Rice.
Byrd is a preacher’s son, a Gulf War veteran, and an award-winning songwriter from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, known for literary, outsider songs that have become Americana favorites. “One of the top 50 songwriters of the past 50 years,” says the Chicago Tribune.
For this concert, Byrd will be accompanied by Johnny Waken (slide guitar, harmonica, mandolin, saw). Waken cut his teeth on electric guitar in Pittsburgh with rock legend Norm Nardini, opening for The Blues Brothers Band on their Red, Hot & Blue tour. Always the consummate sideman, Waken adds color and atmosphere to Byrd’s amazing songs.
