“Perhaps like me you began by learning songs from a songbook with chords included,” Vern says. “A little bit of theory will aid you in moving past this stage to a greater understanding. We’ll begin by discussing the notes in a major scale, then talk about chords, major, minor, dominant 7th, and some others. The next step is connecting notes in a scale to chords in a particular key and talking about the naming of chords with numbers: C, F, G becomes I, IV, V. We’ll look at the Circle of Fifths and how it helps in transposing from one key to another. Finally we’ll use some examples to discuss the structure of songs, going from I, IV, V to I, IV, V, vi and beyond. Bring a pen or pencil, an instrument, and be able to recite the alphabet from A to G.”
