Renowned singer and guitarist Bruce Foley – who has roots in Rochester! – has toured and played with numerous Irish groups since 1974. Some may remember two Irish groups Bruce was in that performed regularly at The Irish Inn in Charlotte in the 1970s: Carolan’s Kind and Clanjamfrey. He has performed in concert with Scottish folk singer Andy M. Stewart, Irish songman Tommy Sands, fiddler James Kelly, and supergroup Cherish the Ladies. Bruce played the uilleann pipes at New York’s Madison Square Garden for Pete Seeger’s 90th birthday celebration.
His wife Mary Coogan is a founding member of Cherish the Ladies and still performs with them. Her parents came from Ireland and her father passed down his love of Irish music to Mary and she became a guitar, mandolin, tenor banjo, and bouzouki player. Acoustic Guitar Magazine named her one of the top four guitarists in Celtic music.
Their online weekly Sunday concerts from their home in Yonkers include a lot of the songs we hear at Golden Link sing-arounds – songs like “The Leaving of Liverpool,” “Caledonia,” “Lakes of Pontchartrain,” “Jambalaya,” and “Row On” – as well as of course Irish songs and tunes.
