Why are Banjos the best instrument for Folk Music: They never "frail" to get our attention!
Each genre of music has an instrument that is designated to be the butt of jokes. For classical, it is the viola. For jazz, the trombone. For folk, it is the banjo. In this workshop led by Sherri Reese & Tim Rybinski, you will learn about several styles of banjo accompaniment for folk music and maybe even learn some new banjo jokes as well!
Sherri Reese began playing old-timey style banjo about 20 years ago when she teamed up with Joe LaMay to form the duo LaMay & Reese. She mainly plays a rhythm drop-thumb style which compliments their songs. Her banjo was custom-made by Dave Large from native woods found along the Ohio River in his town of Deering, Ohio,
Tim Rybinski has been playing 5-string banjo since 1969. He plays a simplified Scruggs-style, which works well enough for accompanying himself and others while singing folk music, but claims he won’t fool real banjo players at most bluegrass festivals. He also plays a little bit of melodic style, and Pete Seeger’s, “Basic strum,” AKA up-picking.
