Golden Link presents the 52nd Annual Turtle Hill Folk Festival on September 8, and 9, 2023
Annual Golden Link event features concerts, workshops, singing,
jamming, food, and fun.
Rochester, N.Y.—Enjoy two days of folk music at the 52nd Annual Turtle Hill Folk Festival, presented by the Golden Link Folk Singing Society at the Rotary Sunshine Campus, 809 Five Points Rd., in Rush, NY on September 8 and 9, 2023. The festival will feature evening concerts by Carla Ulbrich, Magpie, Andrew VanNorstrand & Zoe Guigueno, and Joe Crookston. Tickets to the festival go on sale on Saturday, July 1 on the Golden Link website.
At Turtle Hill, the audience not only gets to see these performers on stage, but also interact with them during workshops and small presentations during the day on Saturday, with many informal opportunities to sing and play music together. The local duo Foxtown opens the concert on Saturday night. The festival is excited to have members of The Submarine School of Music participating in a singaround on Saturday afternoon. The festival will include a grand finale Saturday night with all of the performers. There will also be late-night singing and jamming. Rough camping is available for a small fee, and you can also reserve a bed in the rustic, heated bunkhouses.
Friday, September 8, 7:00–10:00 pm—Concert features (in performance order):
Carla Ulbrich: Carla Ulbrich received an AFA in music from Brevard College and a BA from UNC-Greensboro. She has regularly been on radio and TV shows performing her parody or novelty songs such as "Duet with a Klingon" based on "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off," with a Klingon taking the male lead! She has won numerous songwriting awards. Many of her pieces are of a humorous nature, reflecting on human life. She has written songs about unappreciated elements, such as "The Guy Who Changes the Lightbulbs (Changes Everything)," "Nothing to Say," "Prednisone," and "The Wedgie." She has performed in England, Canada, and much of the US (including Alaska). Ulbrich has taught guitar at three colleges, three music stores, and her own private teaching studio, as well as Hummingbird Music Camp and the National Guitar Summer Workshop. She has several instructional guitar videos on YouTube.
Magpie: Terry Leonino and Greg Artzner as Magpie have traveled the globe, bringing their unique sound and breathtaking versatility to audiences everywhere. From traditional songs to vintage blues, swing, and country to folk classics to contemporary and stirring original compositions, they cover a lot of musical ground. With their powerful voices and harmonies and their excellent instrumental arrangements on guitars, mandolin, harmonica, mountain dulcimer, and concertina, their sound is much bigger than just two people. Award-winning recording artists, songwriters, musical historians, and social activists, Terry and Greg always promise a presentation that is highly entertaining as well as provocative and deeply moving. Terry and Greg will be celebrating their 50th year of playing music together at this year’s Festival.
Saturday, September 9, 7:00–10:00 pm—Concert features (in performance order):
FoxTown: Throughout their lives, Peri Malone and Ella Powers have been heavily involved with musical opportunities. Peri started playing flute and whistle at age 12 and has opened for the Irish bands Teada and Gráda and performed with Lúnasa. Ella started classical violin at age five and began seriously delving into fiddle music a year ago. . They have both frequented the local Irish sessions.They have joined as the duo Foxtown and will perform an opening set on Saturday at the festival.
Andrew VanNorstrand & Zoe Guigueno: Andrew VanNorstrand – a musician, singer, songwriter, and producer – has performed on festival stages, concert halls, dance floors, and living rooms all over North America and beyond. For 18 years, he toured and recorded with the popular dance band Great Bear Trio, which also featured his brother Noah and mom Kim “Mama Bear” Yerton. Zoe Guigueno (GIG-an-oh) will be joining Andrew. She is a bassist and songwriter living in New York City and on Vancouver Island. She is a current member of pop-folk string trio Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards, klezmer supergroup Michael Winograd & the Honorable Mentshn, and the melting pot of genres which is The Faux Paws. Zoe's most recent solo album, We Were Radar Stations, came out on Fiddlehead Records in October 2022.
Joe Crookston: Songwriter, guitarist, painter, fiddler, slide player, eco-village member, and believer in all things possible, Joe Crookston was named 2016 Folk Alliance International Artist-in-Resident. He has played with Dar Williams, David Francey, John McCutcheon, and hundreds more. He will surprise you and awaken the cynics. He is plumbing for lyrical gold like a social archeologist. His songs are universal, his rhythm infectious and in concert, he is funny one moment and transcendent the next. Whether he is picking his 48 Gibson, weaving through lap slide songs, or looping his fiddle, he will draw you in. It happens every time.
Festival Site, Camping, and Food: Golden Link’s Turtle Hill Folk Festival will be held at the Rotary Sunshine Campus, 809 Five Points Road, Rush, NY, a short drive south of Rochester. Rough camping (tents or RVs; no hook-ups) is available for $15 per site for the weekend. For a small fee, you can reserve a bunkhouse bed for one or both nights. Showers are available for campers. All facilities are wheelchair accessible. The Rotary Sunshine Campus is an alcohol-free, non-smoking, pet-free campus (except for service animals). Food provided on Friday and Saturday by Diner on the Run Food Truck. You may bring your own food and non-alcoholic beverages.
Tickets: Tickets will be available at www.goldenlink.org, with a discount for Golden Link members. Online registration begins July 1 and runs until September 7. Tickets will be sold online only, and will not be sold at the gate.
